Activity: Demonstrate the experiment to the children at a safe distance. If you are working with Key Stage 3 pupils, ask them to carry out the experiment themselves in small groups, following the instructions.

This Science primary resource assists with teaching the following Lower Key Stage 2 Science (Year 3) objectives from the National Curriculum:
Pupils should be taught to:
- compare and group materials together, according to whether they are solids, liquids or gases
- observe that some materials change state when they are heated or cooled, and measure or research the temperature at which this happens in degrees Celsius (°C)
This Science primary resource assists with teaching the following Key Stage 3 Chemistry objectives from the National Curriculum:
Pupils should be taught about:
- the properties of the different states of matter (solid, liquid and gas) in terms of the particle model, including gas pressure
- the concept of a pure substance
- mixtures, including dissolving
- diffusion in terms of the particle model
- simple techniques for separating mixtures: filtration, evaporation, distillation and chromatography
- the identification of pure substances.
